Forge Midwest 2017 Was a Success!

Good day, folks. A quick SCUPdate for you. I brought the SCUP quickstart documents to Forge Midwest this past weekend, in sunny Madison, WI, and ran a playtest of them with a great group of players. I'm happy to say that we got some great feedback and after I tweak a few moves, we'll go ahead and put the quickstart docs out this week so backers can see some of what we've got for you.

Additionally, expect to see some press on SCUP coming soon. We'll post here when it happens.

Have a good night, all, and we'll get those quickstart preview docs to you ASAP.

SCUPDATE!
about 7 years ago – Thu, Apr 06, 2017 at 10:37:05 PM

HOW HAVE WE GONE THIS FAR WITHOUT SAYING SCUPDATE?

Hi there, folks! We have juuuuuuust creeped past our final stretch goal. So I hope everyone likes experimental playbooks because YOU'RE GETTING FIVE OF THEM!

I just did an interview with our friend Jason at The Gauntlet podcast and, in that interview, I preview two of playbooks we'll be doing because we met that stretch goal. As soon as that interview drops, I'll post it here and you can hear more about the classes we'll be putting together.

Will there be other stretch goals? We certainly hope so! We're trying to line up the next one now, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

In the meantime, I'll be heading up to Forge midwest tomorrow and bringing playtest materials for SCUP with me. If you're there and you're a backer, come up and say hi to me so I can deliver unto you well-deserved high fives. Or we can just play the game. Your call.

If the playtest materials go over well, we'll be releasing them next week as a quickstart preview for folks so that they can get a taste for how the game will play at the table.

Have a good weekend everyone! Stay safe and take care of yourselves and each other.

10k means Marnie Galloway's art for the whole book!

Quick update!

Jenn here- Todd's at a conference this weekend so I'll be providing the update with the links (therefore taking all the credit for myself! Mwahahaha)!

We reached $10k so that means Marnie Galloway will be providing art for the whole book!

Preview Docs links

As requested, here are preview materials for The Sword, The Crown, and The Unspeakable Power- we will be devoting a whole update to showing off the world/mythos creation system so look for that soon! We'll also be providing previews of other mechanics and the playbooks in future updates. If there are other rules you'd like to see, leave us a comment and we'll see what we can do!

Basic moves

Peripheral moves

MC quick reference

Threats worksheet

What's next?

At $12k we'll unlock 5 additional playbooks written by Todd, Tom, and myself. I won't spoil T&T's ideas, but I'm so excited about the two I pitched that I'm just going to share them here!

  • The Crone- The old and wizened woman. Hard as steel and knows everything. She's managed to survive the schemes and plots of everyone around her and has struck her fair share of bargains with The Unspeakable Power. Can she continue to outlive her enemies?
  • The Jewel- Luminous, precious, valuable. She holds a thing sought by many- perhaps political value, maybe magical. Can she navigate working towards her own goals while others would use her for theirs?

Ends & Odds

In the updates over the coming weeks we will share stories from designing the game over the years as well as examples of play we've run ourselves.

If you'll be near Madison, WI next weekend (4/7 - 4/9) come say hi at Forge Midwest- we'll be there running SCUP and hanging out.

Thank you all for your support- we could not make SCUP a reality without you!

Funded!?!?!
about 7 years ago – Sat, Apr 01, 2017 at 10:52:41 AM

Ever have a weird day?

Hello, friends.

We are shocked, delighted, and humbled that The Sword, The Crown, and The Unspeakable Power hit its funding goal on its first day. Tom and myself have been working on this game for a long time. It started out as just a fun little thing we did after we looked at each other and said "LIKE APOCALYPSE WORLD BUT WITH SWORDS" and the idea that it's going to be a real thing that exists in the world is melting our collective brains. So to everyone who has backed it, from the bottom of our black hearts filled with treachery and malice, we sincerely thank you.

Fun fact: Scott, partner at Wheel Tree, who you may know as the friendly Southern gentlemen on the Jank Cast, was in China when we launched the campaign, just going to sleep. By the time he woke up and looked at the internets, we had fully funded. Needless to say, he was a bit surprised at how much happened while he got his beauty rest.

On to the update!

Next goal: Marnie Galloway's artwork!

As I write this, we've cracked $7,000. If we get to $8,000, we have the amazingly talented Marnie Galloway do artwork. Marnie is more than a stellar artist- she's a great friend and a wonderful person, and we're super stoked to have the possibility of getting her on board. In fact, this has been my personal dream for SCUP for a long time but I genuinely didn't think it would be possible because Marnie's career as an illustrator and comic artist has been taking off and I couldn't imagine that she'd be able to work us into her schedule. Lucky for us and for you, she is onboard and excited at the possibility of bringing her distinctive style to SCUP.

Odds and ends

So what's on the agenda? We'll be doing some press in the coming weeks to discuss the game. We will link to those sorts of things when they happen. Additionally, we will post updates here including:

  • Stories from the game's design.
  • Previews of game documents.
  • Examples of play from games we have run ourselves.

Please let us know if there are other things you would like to see. We are committed to keeping you in the loop as we bring you something fun to play with.

With a twinkle of betrayal in our eyes and a twitch of rage on our lips,

Todd and all the Squirrels at Wheel Tree
